Clinical Practice Guidelines

A Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) is a systematically developed statement/document to assist practitioner and patient make decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances.  Statements will be based on scientific literature, explicitly document the process used to develop the statement, and grades the strength of the evidence used in making clinical recommendations.  The document will integrate the best external evidence with individual clinical expertise and consideration of patient preferences.

Guideline characteristics should include the following:

  • Validity (improves health)
  • Reliability (different users use it with the same results)
  • Reproducibility (a kind of reliability, independent experts generate similar guidelines)
  • Applicability (population it refers to is defined) – Inclusion Criteria
  • Flexibility (population it does not apply to is defined) – Exclusion Criteria
  • Clarity (statements should be clear – avoid using language that could be misinterpreted)
  • Scheduled multidisciplinary review (every three years minimum)

A CPG can originate:

  • Locally through internal processes
  • From a professional or government body
  • Form professional literature, usually research

CPGs require supporting documentation to corroborate that a systematic literature search and review of existing scientific evidence published in peer review journals was performed during CPG development.
