Unit 1C is a 34-bed combined Regional paediatric and gynaecolgoy unit where a team of health care professionals including physicians, nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, social worker, psychologist and other team members work in partnership with the family to coordinate their services to provide care.  Paediatric patients cared for are from birth to 19 years of age.
From the bright coloured murals on the wall to the beautiful playroom and a parent cot at each bedside it is evident that a child friendly atmosphere is a priority.

Unit 1C has six private, four isolation, four semi private, four three-bedrooms and one ward room. Due to the high incidence of infectious disease in children, patients requiring isolation often occupy the private rooms.  However, every effort is made to accommodate patient requests and those reflecting their insurance coverage.
Each paediatric bed has a parent cot at the bedside to accommodate one parent to stay overnight for each patient.

1C is also home to the award winning Paediatric Oncology Clinic open daily Monday through Friday in partnership with the Hospital for Sick Children to provide care for children with cancer in their own community. 1C is also associated with the award winning Asthma Education Centre located on the 3rd floor of the Carlo Fidani building in the cardiopulmonary department.

1C has an abduction prevention program in place to ensure the safety of our paediatric patients.
1C is proud to have on staff a Child Life Worker who is responsible for meeting the recreational needs of children during their stay.  Age appropriate toys /games /activities to make the child’s stay a more pleasant one are provided.  A closed-circuit video system which allows patients to enjoy videos in their rooms free of charge on channel 76 is available.  Portable DVD game-cube units appeal to the teenagers.  A beautiful playroom with a shaded outdoor playground is available at certain times (when staffed by volunteers) for children who do not require isolation and who are well or stable enough to leave their rooms.

YoJee; the therapeutic clown offers clown care to children and families using spontaneous humour and gentle play to minimize stress during hospitalization and treatment . The role of therapeutic clown in the hospital environment is one of friend, playmate and companion. The therapeutic clown assists the Child Life Specialists in normalizing children’s lives during their stay. They help to create a safe play space in a changing and unfamiliar environment.

A nourishment center with a microwave and fridge is located on the unit.
